Beazley Design of the Year Award

Anatomy of an AI System wins the 2019 Design of the Year Award at the Design Museum.

For the second consecutive year in a row, a research project in the digital design category has won the award, suggesting this is an increasingly important area of experimentation for designers.

The project by Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler looks at the amount of human labour, data and resources that are required during the lifespan of the Amazon Echo from manufacture to disposal.

Yinka Ilori was one of a panel of six judges which also included Wallpaper magazine editor Sarah Douglas, product design director at Facebook Melissa Hajj, creative director of Dr. Martens Damein Wilson, Royal College of Art vice-chancellor Paul Thompson and multi-disciplinary designer Martino Gamper.

The winner of the Architecture category was the Maya Somaiya Library in India with a curvaceous roof, inviting people to climb over the structure. In the fashion category, the winner was Ji Won Choi for her streetwear collection for Adidas inspired by traditional Korean garments known as handbok.

The exhibition runs until the 31st March at the Design Museum.
