The phrase ‘IYA NI WURA’ (Translated ‘MOTHER IS GOLD’) is the name of a song, often used in Yoruban culture, that Yinka Ilori grew up singing. It cherishes the strength, beauty, and sacrifice of motherhood. Ilori honours and celebrates motherhood with the 3-piece ‘IYA NI WURA’ sculptural furniture collection in support of Mothers2Mothers, highlighting the power of women and serving as a reminder of their importance and value as a pillar in society.

The fabric, which was hand-made by Hand & Lock for this sculptural furniture series, deeply reflects Ilori’s upbringing and the perception of his own mother. The comfort and protection she gave him inspired the umbrellas depicted in the pattern, accompanied by words that complement the very definition of motherhood — Resilient; Visionary; Strong.

Chairs hold an important significance to Ilori and his early work, reinforcing his love for objects that are meant to be passed on and share stories. The Rocking Chair embraces intimate moments between mother and child, while the Bench is a place to sit and bring a family together.
