Launching as a part of Chicago’s landmark 2024 ART on THE MART summer headline commission (June 6 – September 11, 2024), ‘Omi Okun’, (Yoruban for ‘Sea Water’) is an immersive art film that mirrors Yinka Ilori’s personal memories with the Pentecostal Aladura church in Nigeria and the revelations that arise beyond. The film follows the journey of a church member through various rituals and pilgrimage to the seaside. It depicts the transformative act of belief, seeking healing and strength in the community. Mixing moving artwork with sound, central to the narrative is Psalm 24 of David, which is read aloud by Ilori as he reflects on the sovereignty of higher powers.

The odyssey is divided into four chapters:

1.⁠ ⁠Aso Adura - Prayer Clothes: Community members dressed in white garments gather in a room clad with white fabric, preparing to embark on their sacred journey. The white textiles symbolise purity and dignity.

2.⁠ ⁠Okun Turari - A Sea Of Incense: As the air fills with smoky incense, the church member transitions with multiple senses, mentally igniting the path to the seaside.

3.⁠ ⁠Omi Adura - Prayer Water: As the congregation arrives at the shores and enters the ocean, they feel the power of the water, guiding their destiny and letting go of what can’t be controlled.

4.⁠ ⁠Patience Attracts Happiness: It Brings Near That Which Is Far - The film culminates in a mesmerising dreamscape; a rebirth creating a vibrant, heavenly atmosphere. It is a space between the now and the otherworld. Hopes have become reality.

The intent of the animation transcends religious boundaries, focusing on universal values instead. Personal stories find a common ground in hope and community. By practising intimate rituals, the film invites viewers to explore the depths of their own beliefs, and to find solace, inspiration and confidence.
