Created for Tarkett, this installation reimagined the carpet as a contemporary space for ritual, connection and belonging.

Rituals bring guidance and balance. Something we are all naturally striving for. So how do we create a space for rituals?

Across many cultures, a carpet can be exactly that. It lays the ground for family gatherings, invites you to take your shoes off and make yourself at home, creates a space for prayer, and becomes the setting for stories, dreams and fantasies. A carpet can hold many functions because it creates a distinct sphere within any environment.

If this sense of belonging and grounding is something everyone seeks, how can we make it accessible?

For Tarkett, Yinka Ilori interpreted the carpet as a contemporary, flexible space: one that can become a home, a gym, a place to gather, or simply somewhere to create a moment for yourself. It can be assembled and reassembled wherever needed, allowing people to create their own rituals.

The multicoloured approach is an ode to Tarkett's circularity, inspired by Peru's Rainbow Mountains. The visible layers reference both the layered colours and circular materiality of the flooring while drawing on the symbolism of the landscape itself. Across cultures, these mountains are seen as places of harmony and rebirth. Their mineral hues symbolise vital energy, life force, fertility and the harmonious balance between the earth and the cosmos.

Why rituals? Because rituals derive their power from repetition. They are cycles followed by cycles, repeated actions that create meaning over time. This idea of continual renewal and circular movement complements Tarkett's circular approach, where materials, like rituals, are designed to return, evolve and begin again.
